Studying in Lahti

Lahti has several educational institutions where you can study in English. The most important education providers are:
LUT University
LAB University of Applied Sciences
Salpaus Further Education

To be able to study in Finland, you first need to have a confirmed student place, a residence permit, an insurance, accommodation, and sufficient funding. In Finland, student places are applied for through a joint application procedure in the spring or autumn.

Applying for studies

You can apply to study at a university of applied sciences or a research university if you meet the entry requirements. These may include a school-leaving diploma, a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, or a foreign qualification that entitles you to apply for higher education degree programmes in the country where you completed the qualification.

Residence permit for studies

If you are not an EU or Nordic citizen, you will need a residence permit. To obtain a residence permit, you must have a confirmed study place in Finland. You can apply for this type of a residence permit if your studies will lead to an academic degree, a vocational qualification, or if you intend to come to Finland as an exchange student. The first residence permit must be applied for before you enter Finland. A residence permit for studies is typically granted for the duration of your studies.

As a rule, you should apply for a residence permit online through the Enter Finland online service. The processing time for an application is at least one month. Additionally, you must visit the nearest Finnish diplomatic mission for identity verification. Book an appointment at the mission in advance.

Funding your studies

You will need sufficient funds for living in Finland. In 2024, the minimum required is €560 per month to cover your accommodation, food, and other expenses in Finland. You must have this sum deposited in your own bank account when submitting your application.

In the residence permit application, you must specify how your funding will suffice for at least the first year. You will generally need to have deposited at least €6,720 in your account. With a residence permit for studies, you are allowed to work an average of 30 hours per week in any field.
You must have a private health insurance that covers your medical and pharmaceutical expenses. The insurance must already be valid when you arrive in Finland and remain valid throughout your stay here. A standard travel insurance is not accepted.
